Ability to Disable Downloads for Embedded EchoVideo Content

Currently, when an EchoVideo video is embedded in an LMS in our case Moodle (either via the embed tool or using embed code), there is no option to disable the download feature. This results in a download button being visible to end users, allowing videos to be saved locally.
This has raised concerns among some staff, particularly around intellectual property and the potential for videos to be downloaded and redistributed without consent.
While we recognise that the ability to download videos can be useful in certain contexts (e.g. video assignments where markers or external examiners may need offline access), there is currently no flexibility to control this behaviour based on use case.
Requested Enhancement:
We would like the ability to:
Disable downloading at the point of embedding a video, and/or
Modify download permissions after embedding (e.g. via settings or media management)
Use Cases:
Teaching staff embedding lecture or teaching content where redistribution should be restricted
Courses with sensitive or licensed material
Maintaining download access for assessment workflows where required
Impact:
Providing this control would give educators greater confidence in using embedded video, improve content security, and support a wider range of teaching and assessment scenarios.

Hi Hannah,
I may have misunderstood the request, and maybe it's a different Canny but we need embedded recordings switched off at an institutional level,but quite often receive requests from individual Unit Coordinators who are happy to allow students in their particular units to download embedded recordings. Policy at UTAS is embedded recordings need to be off at an instituional level, but Unit Coordinator discretion as to whether they are then allowed to be downloaded. We get around this currently by creating a linked section and publishing all recordings into that section and allowing UC's to toggle the download ability.
It would be great to have a more granular unit or per embedded recording setting where UC's could choose to override the default setting.

Hi all,
Thank you for this detailed feature request - we understand the concerns around content protection. However, we wanted to clarify that EchoVideo already provides controls that address these scenarios today, specifically through how the Download button and its available options behave based on user authentication and role.
How the Download button works for embedded content:
The Download button appears in the media player for all viewers, but what users can actually download depends on who they are and how they're accessing the content:
Anonymous/unauthenticated viewers (e.g., those accessing media via a public embed code or link) can only download the transcript - they will never see a video or audio download option.
Authenticated viewers accessing content through an LMS like Moodle via the EchoVideo integration are identified by the system, and their download options are governed by your institution settings.
Administrators, Instructors, and the media owner can always download all assets (video, audio, transcript) regardless of where they are viewing the content.
What this means for your use cases:
Content embedded via the LTI/embed tool — Students are authenticated, and their download access is controlled by your institution settings. These these restrict media downloads by default unless you have contacted Support to opt-in to public downloads. Only transcript downloads are available.
Assessment workflows — Instructors, administrators, and media owners retain full download access regardless of these settings, so markers and examiners can still download content when needed.
