New video player zooming in and out

After today's release, before I could even begin to canvas our learning design teams for some feedback about the new player, it started coming into my inbox. After asking a bunch of our team, the feedback is that the video zooming in and out is "distracting", "jarring", "ugly", "unnessecary", and in a worst case scenario "detrimental to those with sensitivities to visual stimula". Some described it as "glitching" when they scrolled the page, because the cursor would quickly move on and off the video, causing it to start animating, and this was especially jarring with multiple videos embedded.
What would be MUCH better is if the video stayed the full size in the player, and the player controls animated in and out covering (semi-transparently) the video for the brief time they were on screen. This is what the vast majority of embedded video players we've come across do (e.g. YouTube, Vimeo), so it's a proven solution.

Screen Automatically Zooms In/Out

I find it really annoying when the size of the screen keeps zooming in/out whenever I hover my mouse outside/inside of the screen (or when my mouse is inside the screen and not active for 5 seconds, the screen also automatically zooms). It used to not be like this. Please bring it back to the previous design (no auto zooms at all)!

Good Morning,
We recently pushed out an update which allows you to "Lock Overlays" in the settings menu, preventing this effect happening. Once you have set this toggle it is stored, so you do not have to enable it every time you are watching a piece of content.
I have attached a screenshot showing where this toggle is located for your reference.
With kind regards,
Marc

Marc Jennings Hi Marc, the issue has been resolved, and in a very efficient manner. Really appreciate your guys's effort to resolve all of our requests!

Hi Marc,
I would echo (ha!) Anne's comments that while I appreciate the quick fix, I don't think it's sufficient.
The fact that the default is still the bad zooming experience means that for the majority of users who don't go looking in the settings, they'll remain with the poorer experience. Great that the toggle is a set once and forget, but the default should be the opposite.
However, the persistent overlays just takes us back to a player that is inefficient on space, resulting in smaller viewable areas. This is particularily important when users are viewing the video in a smaller embed in an LMS - which is 90% of our views.
If slides are the issue, I'd ask which is more important, a poorer experience for users viewing slides, or a poorer experience for users watching videos.Surely users watching only video and not slides is far and away a larger percentage of viewing. For our instutition slides represent a miniscule fraction of a percent of videos.

Hi Anne,
Thank you for your feedback. We did consider the YouTube line experience but, unfortunately, this would then present a problem for users who have uploaded slide decks to EchoVideo.
The Lock Overlays feature is designed to be persistent, so if the toggle is set once then it is stored and all content should be display with, or without, the lock set based on previous selection.
With kind regards,
Marc

Hi Echo,
Whereas I really appreciate the quick turnaround to provide the toggle on each separate media item to freeze the player controls in place, I'm not sure this entirely fixes this problem.
I agree with the comments below that our ideal scenario would be a YouTube type experience with the media taking up the full available space and the controls appearing when hovering without the zooming affect.
I'd also suggest having a default setting for users where they could choose whether their media has the overlays locked, rather than them having to choose that option on every single recording they are viewing.

Thanks Marc and Echo at large for your prompt and understanding response to this one - I really appreciate the acknowledgement, and swift move to adjust in response. :)

the playhead overlay in the new media details page causes the media to move quite dramatically, and it's somewhat disconcerting
