Upload and replace video

It would be so handy if we could upload a new video to replace an existing one "in place", so that all existing embeds and shares reference the new video.
This would be incredibly useful to fix errors in videos (that can't be fixed with the online editor) without having to track down all the places it has been published in an LMS (think welcome videos, LMS walkthroughs, etc etc).

Replacing a video with a newer version

When we were hosting our videos on Vimeo, one of my favorite features was the ability to replace a video with an updated version. This was incredibly helpful because faculty often want to update a lesson, or we missed something in editing that needs to be corrected. With Echo, we have to upload the new video and then change the embed code in Canvas. With Vimeo, we could simply replace the video and it maintained the same URL. This means that all courses that include the video are automatically updated, no extra steps required and no chance that something would be missed.

I agree with Jacob: The requirement to retain at least one of the original tracks makes this option unusable when we want to replace the current video with an updated version. Being able to simply upload the new version as a replacement makes the task so simple and foolproof. Of course, we realize we would then have to set the thumbnail, add polls, edit the details for the new version.

Hi Nita,
I just want to highlight the Replace Track functionality in the Editor. It is not a one stop replace video option as it is designed to be more granular but, hopefully, meets the requirements of this request.
I will monitor this post for a response and we can look to further refine the requirement if this is not suitable.
With kind regards,
Marc

Marc Jennings Hi Marc, I'm not Nita but I too really want this feature. What you describe simply doesn't cut it. From the docs: "The one stipulation that applies to performing any of these tasks is that there MUST be at least ONE TRACK from the original media that remains. You cannot replace or remove all of the original parts." So I can replace the video but not the audio, or replace the audio but not the video? It's simply not the feature we need. If there's an error in a video, or we just want to add additional information with an updated video, I need to be able to replace it wholesale.

New versions of videos

It would be extremely convenient to be able to replace a video with a new version — to correct an error or allow faculty to update a lesson. As it is now, any corrections require a new upload, and then we have to update the embed codes everywhere the video has been used. This is not only time-consuming but may also lead to some courses not being properly updated.

Hi, Cari: We are working towards being able to update media without affecting links. Currently, we have it slated for Q4 of this year.

Kathryn Stewart - Will we still have to keep an original track? Currently you are not able to completely replace videos, either one original audio track or one original video track is needed. We my media team needs the ability to completely replace videos.

Hi Nita Travis we are still working on the ability to replace the original audio and/or video track. I am continuing to monitor this thread for feedback and will use this to keep you informed of progress.
With kind regards,
Marc
